“Big Dreams” - VR Battle Tanks

We made a multiplayer tank virtual reality game. Our goal was immersion; instead of playing VR with a video game controller, we wanted the player to feel like they were there.

The game was custom-made with Unity software and ran on Oculus DK2 hardware. A motor to rotated the chairs when rotation occurred in-game matched physical sensations to the virtual reality. Pedals and custom built sliders added to this tactile experience.

My main tasks were the chair mounting with motor and foot pedal integration. A racing seat and brushed worm gear motor would spin the player around mimicking the turret motions in game.

The gearbox output was connected to an RC car tire riding on grip tape install on the top of a wooden frame. This meant aggressive users (kids) couldn’t break the drive system since it would slip before anything would fail.

Our team won the Outstanding Project award for this Build18 project.
